What early ranking looked at
Four signals of the early web.
Keywords
Say it more, rank higher
Early engines leaned heavily on how often a word appeared on a page. More was better, until it wasn't.
Backlinks
Links as votes
PageRank (1998) treated a link as a vote of authority. It could be gamed from day one.
Meta keywords
Invisible, then ignored
A tag visible to crawlers but not to visitors. Google announced in 2009 that it does not use it for ranking.
Directories
The digital Yellow Pages
Yahoo! began as a hand-edited directory. Being listed in the right one was a ranking strategy of its own.
The black-hat era
Early SEO included tactics that would get a site removed today: hidden text in the same color as the background, keyword walls, link farms, directory spam and doorway pages. For a time they worked, which is why an industry grew around them.
Google answered with updates. After Florida in 2003 came Panda (2011) and Penguin (2012), which demoted thin content and manipulative links. The lesson has held for twenty years: shortcuts get found, and authority that is earned lasts.
